JOB SUMMARY

ViParc (www.viparc.org) is a Wellcome Trust-funded project that aims at helping farmers in the Mekong Delta to raise chickens using lesser amounts of antimicrobials. The project has been running for a total of 3 years. In the last year of the project, ViParc will focus on delivering a training programme targeting veterinary drug shop owners and their staff to reduce the amounts of antimicrobials prescribed to farmers raising pigs, chickens and ducks. The ViParc project includes a multidisciplinary team of veterinarians, microbiologists and economists.

The ViParc Project Manager will be responsible for the logistic arrangement of training modules targeting a total of 400-500 veterinary drug shops owners and their key staff across the province of Dong Thap (Mekong Delta). These modules will be organised at district level. In addition, he/she will liaise with Preventive Medicine Department in Dong Thap to organise logistics for sampling of humans and animal so that changes in antimicrobial use/antimicrobial resistance over time can be measured. The Public Engagement Researcher will enjoy interactions with various communities, with the ability to communicate, listen and engage with them.

They will receive training and continuous mentoring through the project team

KEY TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The ViParc Project Manager will be working under the direction of the ViParc Principal Investigator and will have the following responsibility:

• Liaising with ViParc scientists and project training partners (likely to include international organisations, veterinary experts and microbiologists) to plan and implement the training modules aimed for veterinary drug shop owners and their staff.
• Organising logistics of sampling farms and humans to measure antimicrobial use and antimicrobial resistance.
• Frequently travelling to the project field location (Dong Thap) to liaise with local stakeholders (veterinary drug shop owners and their staff, veterinary and public health authorities).
• Carrying out the administration tasks involved in setting up such training modules.
• Provide regular reports (updates) on progress of sampling/testing including results of the testing to stakeholders.
• Conduct some communication activities (liasing with media, running website, etc.

– BSc or higher degree
– Strong interpersonal and diplomacy skills
– Strong diplomacy skills
– Excellent oral and written communication skills
– Good spoken and written English
– Highly organised
– Energetic and creative; open to new approaches and ideas
– Ability to work with a high degree of autonomy, and yet be a team player

DESIRABLE CRITERIA

– Project management experience
– Communication and media experience
– Social science background to enable scientific input into the project.
