Materials Specialist

Under the guidance of the Head of Materials-Asia (or other job title), work to understand brand needs and provide supply resources to support creative progress and innovation. To work with established processes from sampling through production to achieve brand/design/commercial objectives, while optimising price, profitability and supply. Reduce the proliferation of materials to decrease our risk to redundant materials and also drive selection of materials into a smaller number of selected suppliers.

Work to ensure we have a range of materials that support Clarks business and through testing ensure they are fit for purpose. Assist in data entry of materials in related systems. Assist in establishing processes that help support the above. Assist with special projects and assignments as required

• To oversee the sourcing, development and testing of shoe upper, and lining materials, ornaments, fastening and trims (etc.) from Asia based suppliers, assisting leather team where needed on similar efforts
• To evaluate and rationalize the current local material supply base, ensuring Clarks works with suppliers who can fully meet Clarks requirements on product, price, quality, logistics and service
• To be the initial point of contact for all issues in Asia relating to the assigned and specified materials.
• To own the primary relationship with local material suppliers and representative offices.
• To be the off-shore point of contact for material related issues during sampling and production stages for Product teams, including price negotiation, risk mitigation, MOQ surcharge and resolution of supplier/shoe factory disputes.
• To understand shoe specifications and construction to ensure fit for purpose principles are adhered to so that appropriate materials are specified in terms of aesthetic, technical and physical properties during development stage.
• Create and manage materials libraries for shoe, upper, linings, and componentry.
• Define, set and approve commercial standards for color and quality of sourced materials during product development/commercialization stage.
• Support Production Quality teams as required, in the settlement of technical and quality material issues in production.
• Set up and manage KPIs to ensure the supply base is meeting Clarks expectations and stakeholders have visibility of the benefits of the managed supply base
• Provide material and supplier information and distribute standards to Clark’s on-shore and Regional offices, and assist in communication with core suppliers if necessary.
• To do material source visits when required
• Support Ad-Hoc material oriented Projects and / or reporting as assigned by manager.
• Accountable for adherence to the Clarks Sourcing strategy as defined by the Sourcing function, any pressure to influence the strategy from outside of the Sourcing function, from within Clarks or external, to be immediately highlighted to your line manager to address appropriately

• Written and Spoken English
• Detailed knowledge of Asian supply base for PU, textiles, ornaments, fastenings and trims, some leather knowledge a plus
• Understanding of material composition and their suitability for production, including Restricted Substance control.
• Detailed knowledge of material/trim and component prices, the drivers of price change and opportunities to reduce cost
• Full understanding of footwear material manufacturing processes, understanding lead-time/logistic requirements, and the geographic variations that exist.
• Understanding of physical testing processes for materials and what that means in shoes
• Understand and be able to set commercial quality standards
• Knowledge of footwear materials & their suitability in different types of shoe construction.
• Knowledge of footwear non-leather material development and manufacturing processes
• In-depth knowledge of physical properties of footwear materials and ability to risk asses
• Understanding of material technical testing and testing requirements
• Knowledge of Shoe making and processes
