STUDENT ACADEMIC SUCCESS

Student Academic Success (SAS) furthers RMIT Vietnam’s mission of transformative learning through a full suite of learning-support services. SAS’s offerings to students include one-on-one consultations with Learning Advisors and trained peer mentors, success workshops sharing strategies for academic improvement, and online self-access learning materials. SAS provides academic coaching for underperforming students and collaborates with academic staff to design workshops and resources to develop academic literacies in the disciplinary context. SAS is part of the RMIT Vietnam Library and collaborates with Library colleagues to provide a high-quality experience for RMIT students and staff.

THE ROLE & KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

This Learning Advisor position is responsible for the delivery of Learning Advising through various study support services and resources offered by SAS including: individual and small group consultation sessions, workshops, peer-assisted learning and online self-access materials.

Working in collaboration with the Manager and the Learning Advisors in Student Academic Success, the Learning Advisor provides a range of academic skills development experiences to RMIT students.

This position will require well-rounded skills in learning support and academic literacies development in higher and/or further education institutions. The Advisor may also assist in the maintenance of the online presence of Student Academic Success.

KEY SELECTION CRITERIA

Mandatory
• Completion of a Bachelor’s degree with major relevant to supporting RMIT Vietnam students such as Commerce, Finance, Management, Design, IT, Professional Communications, TESOL/Applied Linguistics, and so forth. MA in field related to English Language and Literacy Development, such as TESOL, Applied Linguistics or Composition is desired.
• IELTS 7.0 across all skills, higher is preferred.
• At least one year experience teaching secondary or tertiary-level students in a classroom environment
• Minimum one year previous experience providing academic and study skills support for secondary or tertiary level learners (can include supplemental support for students in a course where candidate was also the teacher)
• Demonstrated effective experience in engaging students in the use of self-access and online resources and services for supporting students’ immediate and longer term academic and literacy developmental needs
• Strong interpersonal and cross-cultural communication skills for interacting with diverse learners and colleagues in an international university context
• High level of awareness of learner needs in alignment with demonstrated knowledge and commitment to continuous improvement principles and a developmental approach to academic skills support in educational settings.
• Ability to creatively design and engage students with activities that facilitate language and learning skills development in support of learners’ study goals
• Skilled in the use of technology as a teaching and learning tool with proven experience in using digital resources to support rich learning experiences and ability to use Learning Management Systems (e.g. Blackboard, Canvas)
• Ability to display appropriate behaviours in line with the position, as per the RMIT Behavioural Capability Framework (Connectedness, Commitment to Excellence – Improve and Simplify; Imagination and Innovation; Impact; Inclusion; Agility).

Preferred
• Experience teaching Academic English to secondary or tertiary-level students.
• Experience in supporting students with learning and/or physical disabilities.
• Experience in creation of interactive self-access learning materials for online access.
• Some experience or competency in design, or front end web development, or business and commerce, or IT (these are different project focus areas that would fit with SAS strategic directions)
• Strong working knowledge of contemporary approaches to Communicative Language Teaching (CLT)
• Familiarity with use of Powerpoint for design of instructional aids or e-Learning design software (Camtasia, Storyline, etc)
• Demonstrated skill in use of Google Apps for Education
