REPORTING TO: Assistant Head- Primary/ Head of Primary/ Principal
SAFER RECRUITMENT: The British Vietnamese International School, Hanoi is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and applicants must be willing to undergo child protection screening appropriate to the post, including references from previous employers in accordance with our recruitment policy. Interviews will be conducted in person, and they will explore candidates’ suitability to work with children.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
A Teaching Assistant is expected to promote the ethos of the school, by demonstrating a positive, tolerant and caring attitude to all children.
Support for Students
• Create classroom environments that are safe and conducive to learning for young students (from 02 to 11 years old)
• Assist teachers in imparting instruction by providing students with instructional support.
• Create and distribute instructional aides and materials and assist students in comprehending difficult concepts.
• Assist teachers in developing and implementing learning activities and supervise group activities.
• Ascertain that students’ behavior is properly managed within the classroom and address behavioural issues appropriately.
• Monitor students to ensure that they are responding appropriately and report any student discomfort or distress to the lead teacher.
• Clear away materials and aides after each class and ensure the overall cleanliness of the classroom.
• Assist students in handling their personal needs including toileting and washing and help them in eating lunch or snacks.
• Provide support to the teacher in developing and implementing core lesson plans.
• Maintain discipline within the classroom and in play areas and ensure that all students are kept safe and accidents are minimized.
• Observe students to detect signs of illness, injury or emotional abuse and alert lead teacher immediately
• Establish a constructive relationship with pupils and interact with them according to individual needs.
• Helping with display of children's work.
• Raise self-esteem students: Address pupil in the same way; Use positive comments; encourage independence appropriate to age and maturity; etc
• Establish productive working relationships with students, acting as a role model and setting high expectation: Use a clear and firm voice when speaking to children about expected behaviour; Be consistent and fair; Do not show favoritism to some students; Do not make negative comments about the children in front of them; Do not cuddle or kiss children.
• Never leave a child/class on their own in a room. If taking children to the nurse- leave them there and come straight back up.
• No phones switched on in the classroom and no Facebook in school hours. Only use phones in staffroom. No negative comments on FB about school; cannot be friends with parents or students; No photos of children shall be put on FB (or any other online social media site). Personal phone not be used for taking photos of the children.
Support for the Teacher
• Familiarize with the curriculum. Read the teacher’s lesson plans, curriculum books, syllabus, etc. Design and produce displays with minimal supervision.
• Provide regular feedback to teachers on pupil achievement, progress and problems.
• Promote good pupil behavior, dealing promptly with conflict and incidents and reporting in line with school policy.
• Be aware of and comply with policies and procedures relating to child protection, equal opportunities, health and safety, security, confidentiality data protection and reporting all concerns to the appropriate person.
Support for Parents
• Establish constructive relationships with parents/carers.
• Listen for any negative or inappropriate comments in Vietnamese and report these to the teacher
Support for the School
• Attend staff meetings, and other school events as deemed appropriate by the Head Teacher. Participate in training, other learning activities and performance development as required.
• Share and contribute to ideas within the school.
• Contribute to the overall ethos /work/aims of the team and school.
Support for the Curriculum
• Be involved in an evaluation process and in-service training aimed at improving your performance in your role
• Deliver learning activities to students within agreed system of supervision, adjusting activities according to student response/ needs.
• Use ICT effectively to support learning activities and develop students’ competence and independence in its use.
