Scope of Work
The Director of Design and Fabrication Operations ensures that students, faculty and staff are connected to a variety of fabrication tools in the curriculum and across the learning continuum. The Director oversees ongoing development of Fabrication spaces and their culture, organizational structure, and processes to support the institutional mission for building student engagement, creating a culture of stewardship and increasing safety and awareness across the college. The Director is also expected to take initiative in connecting Fulbright with the larger maker communities in Ho Chi Minh City and beyond, where we will invest effort to run community activities for the education of Vietnamese students in general.
Roles and Responsibilities
The position’s duties and responsibilities include:
- Building the University
• Assist and advise administration in matters of budget, policy, facilities or facility modifications, and program implementation and support for the fabrication and design operations.
• Manage all aspects of fabrication spaces at Fulbright and responsible for overseeing the day-to-day operations, trainings and other curricular activities at the designated facilities. Supervises instructional staff and students and oversees onboarding of all personnel.
• Oversee activities to ensure the health and safety of those engaging in Shop operations including all procedures and regulations related to use of any toxic or hazardous materials in the Shop.
• Create strategic priorities and plan for design and fabrication innovation across Fulbright with faculty support. Provide coordination for the implementation of new fabrication initiatives and associated programs. Organize fabrication support for the faculty and other academic programs and activities.
• Work closely with Academic Affairs on matters relating to budget i.e. staff compensation, summer support, etc. Work closely with Facilities on matters relating to physical spaces.
- Developing Students
• Identify and pursue opportunities for courses and other academic initiatives at the Shop, focused on creating impactful student educational experiences.
• Serve as a liaison to student organizations for any fabrication related activities.
• Attend open houses, orientations and other events for new and prospective students to educate them about the Shop.
- External Impact
• Play a role in fundraising for the Shop and its programming. This includes identifying and facilitating outreach to potential supporters across a range of giving levels; creating communications related to fundraising; and managing ongoing stewardship communications.
• Cultivate and manage Shop relationships with both internal and external stakeholders. Build strategic alliances with the makerspace community and industry in Ho Chi Minh City to achieve collaboration in accordance with the goals and objectives of the Shop.
Other duties
Contribute to team effort by welcoming new and different work requirements; explore new opportunities to enhance the services of the department; help others accomplish related job results as and where needed.

Education
• An undergraduate background in a hands-on engineering field with a graduate degree in Mechanical, Mechatronics, or Robotics Engineering from an accredited institution.
Experience
• 10+ years of working experience at design, engineering and prototype manufacture in industry or relevant professional organizations (5-10 years for Assistant Director level)
• Experienced in working in a multi-cultural environment of international/overseas companies
• Experienced in providing training, onboarding to staff, students and/or to practicing engineers
• Experienced in managing makerspace, workshops, R&D laboratories including an impeccable safety record at a level on par with international standards
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
• Proficiency in English
• Knowledge of Vietnamese is an asset
• Good teaching ability is an asset
• Management and maintenance of machine shop and electronic shop equipment including advanced tools such as 3-D Printers, Laser Cutters, CNC Mills and other heavy machinery
• Managing building projects maintenance including scheduling of space improvements
