Commodity(Steel) Trader/merchansider

Vietnam is a strategic growth market for Cargill’s Metals business, specifically Hot Rolled Steel coils (HRC). The consumption of steel in Vietnam is expected to grow markedly over the next 5 years and there is a big trading opportunity for our onshore and seaborne (import) of HRC. This position will generate income from the cash (physical) book and manage execution /price risks, develop multi level relationships with customers/suppliers to generate insight, whilst increasing the liquidity/tradability of the physical spot and forward book via creating optionality, liquidity and facilitating risk management solutions to customers. As Vietnam is a large liquidity (importer) of HRC, this position will allow us to develop an advantageous read of the overall directional flat price view of the regional HRC market.

This role's principal accountabilities :

60% Earnings generation

- Independently procures, sells physical steel from seaborne/onshore, on a daily basis in the spot and forward market to gain revenue.
- Have a clear and advanced understanding of how to execute and extract value from physical trading volume, relative to the LME and/or SHFE futures curve.
- Increasing the tradability/liquidity of the physical cash and forward book up to M+9-12 months out– ability to scale up/down the physical position in size.
- Lead/manage the ohshore book building/trading activities.
- Awareness and control of physical execution risk of the book to ensure 0 operational loss

30% Customer (internal / external) Interface

- Develops / works with existing / new customers and suppliers on daily basis in line with strategy and trading strategy outlined by Book manager and / or Physical Lead to position the book accordingly.
- Pursue strategic goals via customer education/interaction, eg. index purchase/selling, forward fixed price, embedded options.
- Identify new, strategic accounts and emerging relationship needs.
- Identifies and coordinates cross functional internal (Singapore and Vietnam) and external stakeholders to educate and build strong multi-level relationships, ensuring efficient execution throughout the onshore /seaborne supply chain
- Consistently / regularly reviews inefficiencies / areas of improvement within scope of responsibility throughout supply chain

10% Capturing insights for the broader trading engine

- Have a clear understanding of physical market, supply chain dynamics and influences to have strong conviction on market direction
- Collaborate with analytics and commercial/trading team to support trading view by collecting insight from mill/warehouse/traders/suppliers/customers.

Essential Functions/Requirements
- Merchandising/Entrepreneurial mindset and the capability to understand how to combine physical trading with derivative trading, towards earnings monetization/optimization
- Commensurate risk appetite with commercial acumen
- Good bilingual communication skills, able to bridge and build trust / relationship internal / external stakelholders/customers
- In-depth knowledge of market intelligence on steel mills, steel customers, and market dynamics
- Good awareness of risk throughout supply chain and experience in mitigating those risks
- Good English speaker
- Experience to transact to buy and sell actively in any fast moving physical commodity market
- Excellent negotiation skills
- Basic understanding of derivatives or attended some training in school or external

Preferred Qualifications
- Fluent English speaker, educated and worked overseas more than 3 years in a similar job
- Have traded physical commodity on an International trading house with a platform that has exposed him/her to futures /derivative trading
- Suppy chain, trade execution experience (understanding incoterms)
- Basic understanding of risk management tools, options, swaps
