Agronomy/ Leaf Research Manager

PURPOSE STATEMENT:
Provide a reliable and efficient research support and Sustainable tobacco program (STP) service to Leaf production staff in order to achieve improved .

PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES:
· Establish high yielding and good quality tobacco varieties or different environmental conditions with the recommendation of Agronomy/Leaf R&D manager
· Develop and introduce low cost and improved production practices to meet the quality, quantity, cost and yield benefits through research activities.
· Execute trials to recommend fertilizer and other crop inputs for better yield quality of tobacco within the cost an environmental limitations.
· Support field staff to achieve crop production objectives.
· Organise extension staff training and farmer training materials.
· Plan and introduce farmer awareness programs.
· Ensure seed collection and establish good in seed collection process and built up the tobacco seed stocks to meet department’s requirement.
· Take customer feedback of the trials conducted and keep recoded for future benefits.
· Ensure STP requirements are met and assist the line manager in coordinating the activities
· Respond on invest material thru project demonstration
· Assist Agronomy manager in the risk assessment process.
· Provide necessary support in identification process of suitable areas (low Chloride areas) to expand the cultivation by way of testing soils
· Maintain good relationship with research organisations, chemical agencies, government officials, Universities etc.

1. Context/Environment: -
The Jobholder is primarily responsible for agronomy/research & development and training of field staff on Agronomic practices in tobacco cultivation and curing. As there is no research institution involved in this kind of activity in Sri Lanka, he has to gather sufficient information through his own research, reading, studying and attending seminars on developments taken place in similar institution.

2. Knowledge, Skills & Experience: -
He should have to be an agriculturally qualified (BSc Agriculture degree holder). He also should have to have a sound knowledge and a good practical exposure on tobacco cultivation and curing.
Ability to handle designing and presentation of training materials and designing of materials for farmer awareness will be beneficial. Technical skills related to desk top publication and some software development will make the job more interest and enthusiastic.
Technical skills such as statistical designing and analysis, experimental designing, data base management etc. will be helpful in monitoring and evaluation of the experiments.
Sound knowledge in scientific report writing, project proposal preparation will be really advantages.
Good managerial skills especially in leadership, communication and influencing are essential. He should be also very analytical minded, initiative and innovative. Exposure to similar situations in other BAT companies, research agencies and organisations would be a distinct advantage.

· Improvement in leaf yield, quality and cost saving through agronomic practices.
· Plan and action to transfer research findings and new technology in effective ways to the extension staff.
· Create positive mental attitude to change effectively to adopt innovations.
· Motivate farmers and extension staff to adopt new technology.
· Look forward to sustaining the tobacco farming with limited use of agrochemicals and introduce effective IPM technology to make the business more profitable and attractive.
· Maintain safety standards at the highest level.

4. Working Relationships
Internal – Agronomy/Leaf Research and Leaf growing Manager, Leaf Blending Managers, Leaf Field Staff in the department and Regional agronomy manager, STP manager in global
External – Academic, research staff of Universities, Research institutions, Laboratories, Agrochemical Agencies, Local leaf suppliers and Department of Agriculture.

5. Additional Comments
Challenges that have to be faced by the Job Holder are:
