500 Startups is a global Silicon Valley-based early-stage technology venture capital firm. 500 Startups Vietnam is the most active Vietnam-focused VC fund. We have already invested in 50 companies, and we plan to increase that to up to 100 companies by 2020. BUT BEFORE YOU APPLY, BE AWARE:
The Vietnam team is small.... It will never be more than 15 people at a given time and will typically be around 8-10 people. Each functional area will have 1-3 people. The top management travels frequently -- one is based in SF, the other is based in HCM but travels ~30-40% of the year. That means you may feel lonely from time to time. You are expected to be independent and disciplined.
...But we do a lot. We scan through thousands of companies in the market to invest in 20-30 companies per year -- a very fast rate. We are supporting dozens of portfolio companies. We field frequent inquiries from other investors, reporters, government & NGO officials, and other stakeholders. That means your responsibilities may vary substantially from week to week.
So there is a lot to learn. You may have substantial prior experience, but between learning about the venture capital industry, becoming adept with our processes and systems, and familiarizing yourself with our portfolio companies, it’s quite likely you’ll feel “underwater” for the first several months.

THE ROLE: INVESTMENT ANALYST (BASED IN HCMC)
Your role will have two main parts:
- Help screen and execute investments (40%). We plan to do 2-3 deals per month…quite different from most other PE/VC funds. That’s exciting, but it also means that we need a very efficient and effective investment process. You would participate in commercial assessment and legal due diligence, as well as in determining / executing deal structures.
- Source startups (30%) from around the world, both those focused on or expanding to Vietnam market as well as those being built by Vietnamese founders / teams for global opportunities. This can involve attending events.
- Your role may also involve other tasks (30%), including supporting portfolio companies, administrative assistance, or other items that arise.
Every day will be different. In the morning you may find yourself doing desk research or syncing up with the rest of the team; in the afternoon you may be meeting with startup founders or reviewing legal documents; in the evening you may be joining the latest local startup event.
As such, we expect our team members to be responsible, detail oriented, proactive, good communicators (pref. strong bilingual Vietnamese & English), and eager learners.
